The Spectrum Experience: A 2-part Series on Transition Planning in High School

Event Description: 

In this series, parents and guardians will learn about transition education including federal and state laws. We will go over the transition planning process, pre-employment transition services, the shift from entitlement to eligibility, and how to proactively plan for the future. The second session will showcase free resources on the Transition Tennessee website, as well as how to find providers in Tennessee using the Tennessee Disability Pathfinder.

Presented by:

Christina Muri Irland is an Educational Consultant at Transition Tennessee. Prior to Transition Tennessee, she worked as a Transition Specialist and Special Education Teacher at Chicago Public Schools. Christina has a bachelor's and master's degree in special education from Michigan State University and has a transition specialist certificate from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Hope Armstrong is an Educational Consultant at Transition Tennessee. Prior to Transition Tennessee, she worked as a Pre-Employment Transition Specialist at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College. She also has experience working as an elementary teacher, intervention specialist for the Family Preservation program, and program manager of a therapeutic foster care program. Hope has a Bachelor’s in elementary education and a Master’s in school counseling from Western Kentucky University.

Learning objectives:

Session 1

  • Understand state and federal transition laws
  • Know what to expect during the transition planning process
  • Learn about the importance and benefits of Pre-Employment Transition Services provided by Vocational Rehabilitation


Session 2

  • Understand the shift in law from entitlement (IDEA) to eligibility (ADA)
  • Learn about free family and student facing resources on the Transition Tennessee website
  • Identify how Tennessee Disability Pathfinder can assist in finding outside agencies with one's community
  • Pinpoint steps to proactively plan for the shift from high school to the adult world
