Meet Our 2023 Scholarship Awardees

Benjamin Mitchell

As an experienced nurse with over 15 years in healthcare, I have dedicated my career to caring for others from adults and children with developmental and intellectual disabilities to veterans and retired energy workers. Recently diagnosed as an adult on the autism spectrum, I bring a unique perspective to my work. In addition to my nursing background, I am an enthusiastic gardener and an active member of The Seed Savers Exchange International Conservationalist and Experimental Farming Group. With a passion for horticulture, I strive to incorporate horticulture therapy into my future pursuits in healthcare informatics, blending my love for nurturing others with the healing power of nature.

Bailey Widener

A recent graduate from Maryville High School, Bailey played cello for the high school orchestra and took on a leadership role at the Maryville Connect Club. While a member, Bailey worked to create inclusive opportunities for younger students with disabilities by helping to implement lessons and activities. Bailey LOVES music and is gifted with the ability to play acoustic, electric, and bass guitar. Music truly makes his heart happy! Bailey wants to pursue his post-secondary education and was recently accepted to the University of Tennessee FUTURE Program. It is his dream to find a career in the medical field and help others in need. There have always been obstacles for Bailey but from day one he has shown incredible strength, determination, and courage to be a part of this world. Bailey is a compassionate soul who faces each day and challenge with a brave heart and a loving soul.
